In Rotation: 11/23/16

by Ben Pinette

As Uncle Snoop said, it ain’t no fun if the homies can’t have none. Here are the songs you should check out this week. Spread the good word of music. There is a lot of talent out there just waiting to be recognized.

9th Wonder – ‘Brooklyn in My Mind (feat. Mos Def, Jean Grae & Memphis Bleek)’
The third ‘Crooklyn Dodgers’ line up from back in ’07. 9th Wonder supplies the three Brooklyn MCs with a perfect beat to tear up – an overall dope collab. Top ten producers no doubt.

Westside Gunn – ‘Mr. T’
My favorite Gunn song (so far). He rides the heavenly Apollo Brown production with ease, blending braggadocio and classic hip hop bars for three minutes straight. It’s only time before he and Conway are sitting up there with the genre’s greats. Too nasty.

Parliament Funkadelic – ‘Ain’t That Funkin Kinda Hard on You Remix (feat. Ice Cube & Kendrick Lamar)’
Still counting my lucky stars that this actually happened. I mean Ice Cube and Kendrick Lamar is already crazy enough – two Compton legends. But, when you add in George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, well, that’s a whole other definition of greatness. I would love to hear another Cube solo album, too. He’s still got it.

A Tribe Called Quest – ‘We the People’
Simply amazed by this album every time I listen to it. A true masterpiece. Rest in power Phife Dawg.

Atmosphere – ‘Like a Fire’
I had the fortunate opportunity to catch Atmosphere live a few weeks back. It was my fourth time seeing the group, and I was once again blown away. Slug and Ant’s chemistry is as tight as it’s ever been – what a career. Fishing Blues is out now, really dig that project as a whole. Their best #DadRap album yet.

Calez – ‘Still Good (feat. Nico Segal, Mick Jenkins & Alex Wiley)’
Another young stunnah from the Chi. Make sure to peep his Baby mixtape if you’re feeling this. Smooth.

Termanology – ‘Top Shotta (feat. Joey Bada$$)’
One of my favorite cuts from Term’s More Politics album that dropped last week. Never woulda thought I’d see these two on a track together. Leave it to Statik!

Add-2 – ‘Set it Off’
The fact that this dude isn’t huge boggles my mind. Dynamite flow, always works with great producers and he can bring the heat in the bars department. Deserves wayyyy more spins.

Jay IDK – ‘Somebody’
Where else are you gonna hear Slum Village and Will Smith? Genius. Can’t get enough of this song – Jay IDK knocked it outta the park. Don’t sleep on this any more!
