In Rotation: 12/21/16

by Ben Pinette

The end of the year is near, folks! Here are the songs you should check out this week. Spread the good word of music. There is a lot of talent out there just waiting to be recognized.

Little Simz – ‘Picture Perfect’
Hardest cut from her latest LP. Flow is off the charts, and I can’t get enough of that beat either. A Joey Bada$$ remix to this would be a problem. U.K. taking over.

Kid Cudi – ‘By Design (feat. AndrĂ© 3000)’
Classic Cudi singing, Plain Pat/Pharrell production and a feature from AndrĂ© 3000. This has to be good by default. Up there with my favorites from Passion, Pain and Demon Slayin’ for sure. Proud of you Cudi, album is dope!!

Wiz Khalifa – ‘Bombay and Lemonade (feat. Juicy J & Chevy Woods)’
Taylor Gang in the house. Honestly, this might be the best song that Wiz has dropped in ages. Has that classic Khalifa sound to it – the back and forth was quite fun too. This legit could be a Kush & OJ bonus track.

Little Brother – ‘Say it Again’
Few acts in the hip hop genre top North Carolina’s ‘Little Brother.’ 9th Wonder, Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh mesh impeccably; their first two albums are certified classics. This ridiculously smooth composition is from their 2nd LP The Minstrel Show, which I still rank as one of the most cohesive projects ever front to back. If you’ve never listened to this group I urge you to!

Yo Gotti – ‘Castro (feat. Kanye West, 2 Chainz, Quavo & Big Sean)’
Chorus hasn’t left my head since it dropped late last week. Perfect for the whip or a party – this lineup needs a collab EP. That would be something.

D.R.A.M. – ‘Sweet VA Breeze’
Love this album in every definition of the word. Contains some of the year’s top singles, as well as countless deep cuts that are worth paying attention to. ‘Sweet VA Breeze’ is a touching call to home; cannot wait to play this during the summer months. Old school BBQ music.

Ivan Ave & Fredfades – ‘Reaping’
So excited to hear about the Mutual Intentions label becoming official. This combo stands as one of the strongest duos on the imprint – peep their Breathe and Fruitful collab projects for more.

Jay Electronica – ‘Jazzmatazz’
Every now and then I think about Act II and become sad. Then, I play songs like this and I realize that everything will be okay. The fact that I even get to enjoy just one Jay Electronica song is a blessing. He’s already established himself as a legend even without dropping a proper album, which is a ridiculous feat. Back catalog is filled with powerful tracks – rest in peace Guru.

Rev Run, Puff Daddy, Ma$e, Snoop Dogg, Salt-n-Pepa, Onyx & Keith Murray – ‘Santa Baby Remix’
Since I’m feeling festive, I’ll end this week’s playlist with my favorite hip hop Christmas track. They’re some stellar ones out there, but this always takes the cake for me (or should I say milk and cookies. Was that too corny? Probably). Happy holidays to all!
